Chris Gray
Bio
Chris Gray is one of Scotland’s most sought-after multi-instrumentalists—a piper, pianist, whistle player, composer and teacher of great versatility. Originally from Southwest Scotland, performance highlights include Classic FM Live 2022 at the Royal Albert Hall, the Basel Tattoo, and festivals in Wickham, Ortigueira and Lorient. He has performed for Keepers of the Quaich banquets at Blair Castle, including with Nicola Benedetti in 2022, and piped with Inveraray & District Pipe Band, winning the 2017 World Pipe Band Championships. Chris was one of the pipers on Hans Zimmer’s BAFTA and Oscar-winning Dune film soundtrack.
His arrangement of ‘MacKintosh’s Lament’ for piano, strings and vocals has reached audiences worldwide and featured on Eddi Reader’s Scala Radio programme. His self-titled debut album (2020) features original compositions rooted in folk tradition, followed by tune book Chris Gray’s Contemporary Tunes from Scotland (2021).
Chris is in high demand as a teacher, recently instructing at Junior Conservatoire of Scotland, The National Piping Centre and internationally.
Reviews
“Chris Gray has a deep-rooted understanding of the traditional music he has played from an early age. He has a subtle and special touch on both pipes and piano, showing great expression within the traditional idiom but he’s also not afraid to push and mould the music in different ways.”
